Peanut And Its Benefits

2010 January 4

Peanut Butter can be very nutritious part of your diet. It is an old-time favorite of adults and children. It is a health aid in benefiting heart disease and obesity. These two diseases all too often go hand in hand.

When we include this in our diets they appear to protect against heart disease by lowering bad LDL cholesterol and controlling body weight. Less body weight usually means less body fat which means, fewer clogged arteries. The nutrients in peanuts are very healthy for growing bodies. These benefits are extremely important for growing children, whether young or teenagers.

The peanuts you put in the food processor have more antioxidants than some fruits. The fats are healthy. 30 peanuts have a good number of calories for the power they give you – but don’t eat more than that in one sitting. Protein, Carbohydrates and Good fats. Peanuts are the perfect snack food.

One of the great antioxidants in peanuts is resveratrol. Perhaps you’ve heard it associated with the health benefits of red wine. It’s the same stuff that’s in red wine. Resveratrol is an antibiotic of sorts that is produced by plants to fight infection, fungus and disease. In humans it triggers the SIrt1 gene which science is proving can extend life.

Uses Of Peanuts:

•  Sprinkle a handful over your salad at lunch. For that matter, add some raisins, too

•  Simply enjoy a small handful as a healthy snack. But don’t over do it, they do have calories – even if they’re good. Try to stick to 30 or less.

•  Cut the stems off some bing cherries. Shove a peanut into the middle and enjoy. (It’s no different than peanut butter and cherry jelly, is it?) If you try that with grapes, let me know.

•  Toss cooked brown rice or asian noodles with sesame oil, chopped peanuts, scallions, sweet red pepper, parsley, shredded carrots and raisins.

•  Add some to healthy sautéed chicken, pasta and vegetables.

•  Mix ground peanuts, water and sugar in a blender for a great, healthy shake.

Facts about nuts:

Nuts have been used as a part of human diet for centuries.

The fat content in nuts are mostly unsaturated fats, which helps to decrease the level of LDL ‘bad’ cholesterol and maintains the level of HDL ‘good’ cholesterol.

Many studies have proved that those who take nuts regularly along with other healthy dishes have a significantly reduced risk of heart attack.

The antioxidants present in nuts can help to fight some forms of cancer.

Nuts are great sources of protein, Vitamin E, zinc, Calcium and Magnesium.

Contrary to the popular belief, nuts do not contain cholesterol and are very low in saturated fat.

A mixture of variety of nuts provide a wide range of vitamins and minerals like potassium, phosphorous, selenium, copper, thiamin etc.

Peanuts are also an excellent source of vitamin E, niacin, folate and manganese.

The researchers were surprised that peanuts were as rich in antioxidants as strawberries and other types of high level fruits and are thinking that it may be possible to breed peanuts that are specifically high in antioxidants.

Eyelid Surgery And Its Effects

2010 January 4

Eyelid surgery and brow lifts are some of the most common cosmetic surgery procedures available. The reason that they are so popular is because they can help eliminate deep forehead wrinkles and furrows and the sagging tissue above the eyes. Eyelid Surgery or Blepharoplasty is the removal of excessive, sagging or wrinkled skin, as well as fat and sometimes muscle from the upper and/or lower eyelids. Getting rid of the “bags” gives a younger healthy lasting look.

Why Eyelid Surgery?

As we get older, excess skin forms around the eye area and the skin loses elasticity. Fatty tissue also may accumulate under the skin. Your eyes will “look older” because aging processes leave them appearing tired, puffy or wrinkled. Even with a good skin care and eye care routine, puffiness, wrinkles, and drooping eyelids will occur. Body chemistry and genetic factors can even cause these types of aging effects in younger people. Plastic surgery has the potential to restore a youthful and renewed appearance to your eyes.

Risks and/or complications related to Eyelid Surgery

For most eyelid surgery operations the patient will experiences potential side effects consisting of temporary discomfort, tightness and swelling of eye lids, bruising.

Many experience temporary dryness, burning, or itching of the eyes. Additionally some patients report excessive tearing, and a general sensitivity to light for first few weeks following the procedure.

Eyelid surgery is one of the most popular plastic surgery procedures performed in the United States each year. It is frequently done at the same time as other procedures, such as a facelift or browlift, and can be combined with laser or chemical resurfacing to smooth skin wrinkles. It is a safe, effective procedure and causes minimal scarring and discomfort.

Eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty) does not have an effect on the eyeball, and may offer you a solution. It is often performed under local anesthesia. Eyelid surgery can take away years of aging, giving your eyes a smoother and more youthful appearance, and scars are typically not noticeable, as the surgeon places them in the crease of the eyelid so they cannot easily be seen. Eyelid surgery can correct drooping upper eyelids and bags below your eyes that can make you appear older and more tired than you actually feel.

Included among the related aesthetic problems that blepharoplasty can correct are:

• Under eye circles and bags

• Hanging skin

• Surplus fatty deposits

• Excess skin which makes the upper eyelid’s natural folds less visible

• Fine wrinkles on the lower eyelids

• Redundant skin of the forehead and upper eyelid

What are the Benefits of Tissue Conservation Blepharoplasty Surgery?

• No Hollow eyes after eyelid surgery-Older excisional blepharoplasty techniques removed skin and fat and often left the eyes looking hollow and turned down at the corners.

• No change in eyelid shape-Older blepharoplasty methods that removed skin shortened the eyelid and weakened eyelid support. The result was a sad eyed look.

• Plumping the depressed cheek-As we age our cheek near the lower eyelid sinks in because fat and skin sag down lower in the cheek.

Lyme Disease And Its Causes

2010 January 1

Lyme disease also called Lyme borreliosis, is an infection that derives from a tick bite. It is caused by a kind of bacteria (germ) called a spirochete. This bacterium is usually found in animals such as mice and deer. Lyme disease is diagnosed based on symptoms, physical findings (e.g., rash), and the possibility of exposure to infected ticks; laboratory testing is helpful in the later stages of disease. Most cases occur in the Northeast, upper Midwest, and along the Pacific coast. Mice and deer are the most commonly infected animals that serve as host to the tick.

Causes of Lyme Disease

1. Bacterium ( Borrelia burgdorferi ).

Symptoms of of Lyme Disease

1.Fever

2.Headache

3.Lethargy

4.Muscle pains

5.Stiff neck

6.Joint inflammation

The common causes and risk factor’s of Lyme disease include the following:

Lyme disease is caused by an infection from a micro-organism (Borrelia burghdor feri), itself transmitted by a bite from the wood tick, a blood-sucking parasite which normally lives on deer.

Risk factors for Lyme disease include walking in high grasses, other activities that increase tick exposure, and having a pet that may carry ticks home.

Having exposed skin.

People who spend time in grassy and wooded environments are at an increased risk of exposure.

Not removing ticks promptly or properly.

The disease can be spread when an infected tick bites a person and stays attached for a period of time.

The disease is actually a bacteria spread from the bites of infected ticks. It is easy to see why anyone spending time outdoors may get infected. Originally, the disease was thought to be delegated to the Northeastern part of the country. The first case were diagnosed near the small town of Lyme, Connecticut. The name of the town stuck with the disease and is known today as Lyme disease.

As with most diseases, it has been found that Lyme disease can be contracted anywhere. Cases have been diagnosed in most, if not every, state in the USA and several parts of Canada. If there are ticks, there will be Lyme disease.

Lyme disease mostly happens in rural and suburban regions. Lyme disease is found in United States, Europe, Asia and Australia.

The symptoms of Lyme disease include: Fever Headache Fatigue Chills Stiff neck Muscle aches Joint pain Skin rash named erythema migrans, which appears from week to month after a tick bite. This rash usually starts at the site of the tick bite. Originally it is a small red spot that grow larger. The center fade, which looks like a “bull’s eye” or ring. Some people have just many red spots instead. The rash burns and itches often. However some people do not feel it.

Often the victim develops a fever, and fatigue. Headache, muscle and joint aches are other symptoms. Left untreated Lyme Disease can cause meningitis, tremor, pain and even hallucinations and memory loss. Symptoms usually appear in 1-2 weeks, but can be as long as one month. However, it is possible for an infected person to display no symptoms, or display only one or two symptoms, which can make a diagnosis very difficult.

Gallstones And Its Causes

2010 January 1

Gallstones cause the inflammation of the gallbladder. They also block the bile duck around the liver. This blockage if left for a long time leads to possibly damage and infections. The gallbladder is then affected. The liver and the pancreas can also be infected.

Gallstones primarily consist of two different types namely cholesterol gallstones and pigment gallstones. The causes vary depending on the type of gallstone. An increased amount of cholesterol present in the bile and reduced amounts of essential bile salts would contribute towards the formation of cholesterol gallstones. The bile contains bile salts which are responsible for breaking down the cholesterol present in the bile. When there is an excessive amount of cholesterol present or if there are insufficient bile salts present to synthesize the cholesterol, then gallstones are formed.

Gallstones Causes

If you are suffering from gallstones, chances have it that you fall into the category of the Gallstones Four F’s.

1. Fat! You may have a few extra pounds around the waist! Studies show that 2 out of 3 adults are overweight. It is also documented that 1 out of 4 adults are obese. If you are part of this category, you run an increased risk of suffering from gallstones.

2. Forty! You may be in your 40s and beginning to realize that things are not working as well as they used to. Don’t fret because you need to learn how to eat according to your body. When you had a 20 year old body; you could eat like a 20 year old. But now that you are forty; you may need to eat like a 40 year old. And because gallstones are typically caused by a poor diet, eating healthy at age 40 is extremely important.

3. Females! Unfortunately, ladies are more prone to gallstones than men. Because women typically have a higher body mass index and live a less active lifestyle, women are more likely to be diagnosed with gallstones.

Did you know that your diet is most likely the cause for your gallstones? And the first way to treat a problem is to prevent the problem from occurring again. Foods that are often associated with gallstones forming are high fat foods, high cholesterol foods, fried foods, eggs, pork, onions, fowl, milk, citrus, corn, milk, beans and nuts.

There are natural methods available to anyone who needs help getting rid of these hazardous stones. There is even a natural method which takes care of the problem within 24 hours. You no longer do you need to spend so much money trying to get the solution you need.

Gallbladder surgeries are actually a pretty commonplace surgery in the medical field. Millions of people are functioning fine without their gallbladder. Though, your body will eventually adjust; you should be fine for years to come.

Within the first few months without your gallbladder you should expect diarrhea and nausea due to the bile your gallbladder once regulated. This should eventually go away over time.

Diabetes And Its Symptoms

2009 December 31

If you experience the early symptoms of diabetes (commonly called pre-diabetes), it means it is too late for its prevention. However, reversal of those symptoms is possible with aggressive intervention and lifestyle modification. Proper control means reversal of the syndrome, and is possible even in later stages of this debilitating disease.

Early Symptoms Diabetes is an Oxymoron If a person is experiencing early symptoms diabetes it is said that he is suffering from pre-diabetes. Have you ever thought what is pre-diabetes. Have you ever talked of pre-pregnancy? A woman is either pregnant or not pregnant. If a person is pre-thirsty; it means that he is not thirsty. Once a person starts to experience symptoms like frequent urination, increased HbA1c level and other potential signs of diabetes; it means that this severe disease has already set in.

Generally the signs and symptoms of diabetes can be divided into two groups:

1- Symptoms common for both types of diabetes, and

2- Symptoms specific to the type of diabetes

Some of the early signs of diabetes can mimic other conditions, so if you experience any of these symptoms, check with a medical professional to determine the actual cause. Diabetes can begin to make changes in your body in subtle ways, like increased irritability or fatigue. Most people can relate to feeling this way at one time or another and these symptoms may not reflect anything other than stress or lack of sleep. However, if these signs are present along with frequent urination, blurred vision or a dramatic or unusual weight loss, it’s time to talk to a doctor.

Another important early symptom of diabetes includes a constant and annoying feeling of hunger. This is because your body is not digesting your food at the maximum level, and is thereby creating a false sense of emptiness. An increase in infections, particularly yeast infections, and an inability to heal at a normal rate are also symptoms that could signal the onset of diabetes. These signs point to a diminished immune system that is created in a diabetic condition.

WHEN DIABETES SYMPTONS INDICATE A CALL TO YOUR DOCTOR:

You feel very thirsty and find yourself urinating, much more often than normally.

You become nauseous, for no apparent reason, and this happens more than once.

Weight loss has become an issue, and you’re unsure why you’ve lost weight.

Your breathing has changed, and you notice your breathing deeper and more rapidly than before.

Your breath smells very strange, and even brushing your teeth are gargling with mouthwash, it’s only a temporary solution.

You find that your vision has become blurred, possibly you feel weak and tired, and you’re thinking is not as clear as it should be.

You notice that your coordination is not as good as it should be.

You have a small cut that simply won’t heal.

People can and do live with both Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes, however early detection is the key to health and longevity. If you or someone close has been displaying diabetes symptoms, make an appointment with your doctor as soon as possible.

Breast Cancer And Its Symptoms

2009 December 31

Breast cancer is one of the most common cancers in women with 41,000 cases being diagnosed each year as well as about 300 men. The chances of developing breast cancer are higher in older women but lower in those who have children at an early age and have breast fed their children. It’s also important to develop some breast cancer tests of your own, that you can do on a regular basis in between mammograms. As soon as you hit puberty, it’s a good idea to conduct self breast cancer tests as this begins the period where your chances of getting breast cancer begin.

There are several symptoms:

* a lump-it will usually be small, firm and painless

* veins that become more prominent on one or both breasts just under the skin surface

* a depression in any area of the breast surface that was not there before.

LIQUID DISCHARGE FROM THE NIPPLE:- Another possible symptom of breast cancer is nipple discharge. This discharge can be in the form of either blood or pus that is clear, green or yellow. However, like the above symptoms discharge from the nipple is generally down to other causes.

A CHANGE IN THE BREAST SKIN’S APPEARANCE:- If your breast skin starts to look different this could be a sign of breast cancer. This type of cancer may cause your breast skin to become dimpled (like an orange peel), wrinkled, swollen or inflamed. However, like with lumps a change in the breast skin’s appearance can be down to other factors.

Following tests may be done:

Mammography – a low dose x-ray of the breast tissue

Ultrasound – the use of sound waves to build up a picture of the breast tissue

Colour Doppler ultrasound – shows the blood supply to the area to determine the difference between a cancer and a benign lump

Needle (core) biopsy – a needle is used to take a small piece of tissue from the affected area

Fine needle aspiration – a needle and syringe are used to take a cell sample form the affected area

Blood tests – general health check to see how the liver and kidneys are working and check for the presence of cancer producing chemicals in the blood

Excision biopsy – surgery where the whole lump is removed and sent for examination

One-stop clinics – Clinics where all relevant tests are done together and results are processed while you wait.

Diet:

During our body’s process of converting food to energy, we create free radicals in our body. These free radicals are damaging to our cells and DNA if we don’t combat them. Left unchecked, free radicals contribute to speeding up the aging process and to causing diseases such as cancer, heart attack and stroke.

Anti-oxidants, however, can help us combat these free radicals, and a diet in anti-oxidants is linked with preventing cancer, heart disease and stroke. So, doctors recommend a diet high in anti-oxidants – which means eating lots of fresh fruits and vegetables and drinking green tea each day.

Brain Cancer And Its Symptoms

2009 December 29
Posted by credulous.yahoo

There are two main types of brain cancer. Primary cancers start in the brain. Metastatic cancers start somewhere else in the body and moves to the brain. The most common tumor types in adults are gliomas and meningiomas. In children, incidence is generally highest before age 1 and again between ages 2 and 12. The most common types of brain tumour in children are astrocytomas, medulloblastomas, ependymomas and brain stem gliomas.

Causes of brain cancer

As is the case with many other types of cancer, the causes of brain cancer is a big topic for researchers. However, certain genetic conditions and exposure of head to radiation (as received during radiotherapy as part of treatment of other conditions) are known to be causes of cancer. There are a number of other theories that keep coming up time and again, each suggesting different possible causes of brain tumor (one famous one is about mobile phones causing brain cancer). However, there really isn’t a very convincing theory about what causes brain cancer.

Symptoms:

Brain cancer symptoms don’t usually start out as something easily noticed. In fact most people don’t get diagnosed because they relate these to stress and poor eating habits. However, headaches, dilated pupils and vomiting are some of the earliest signs that will show up. In young children, a brain tumor can cause the skull to grow in diameter, and make the fontanelles bulge. Increased intercrainal pressure is the biggest thing to watch out for because it can cause displacement amongst certain parts of the brain and very lethal brain stem compression.

Cancers are typically painless at first. As they grow, the first symptom is often a mild discomfort, which may steadily worsen into increasingly severe pain as the cancer enlarges. The pain may result from the cancer compressing or eroding into nerves or other structures.

The symptoms are caused by the tumor pressing on or encroaching on other parts of your brain and keeping them from functioning normally.

A sign is also an indication that something is not right in the body. But signs are defined as things that can be seen by a doctor, nurse, or other health care professional. Fever, rapid breathing rate, and abnormal breathing sounds heard through a stethoscope may be signs of pneumonia.

The biggest problem with brain cancer and brain tumors is that their symptoms are often nonspecific making it is very difficult to know if you have it or not, unless you are seriously looking for it. The most common symptoms of brain cancer are headaches, general weaknesses, difficulty in walking, clumsiness and seizures. Other more serious symptoms include difficulty with speech, abnormal vision, nausea, vomiting, quick emotional changes, and an altered mental state.

Brain cancer is an incredibly serious form of cancer and it is important for us to know what these brain cancer symptoms are so that we can take necessary action to arrest the situation early. If you suspect you are suffering or are suffering from these symptoms, please consult your doctor early to ascertain your actual medical condition. If brain cancer is confirmed, discuss with your doctor for an appropriate course of treatment best suited for you.

Bladder Cancer And Its Risks

2009 December 29

Each year more and more research is conducted on how to reduce your risk of developing cancer. For some forms of cancer, it’s fairly simple to understand how to reduce risk. For example, we know that most lung cancer victims are smokers, and that many cases of skin cancer are caused by unprotected over exposure to the sun.

This study examined the following lifestyle habits and their ability to increase or reduce risk for urinary bladder cancer:

Cigarette Smoking – Cigarette Smoking was found to increase the risk of developing urinary bladder cancer. The increased risk was more significant in women than men.

Drinking cocoa – Interestingly enough, drinking cocoa was associated with an elevation in risk of urinary bladder cancer in men, but not in women.

Hair Color – Women who used hair color had a slightly elevated risk of developing urinary bladder cancer if they also smoke. However, non smoking women had no significant risk factor if they used hair color.

Drinking coffee- Coffee drinking showed no elevated risk – but it showed no benefit, either.

Drinking alcohol – No significant risk was associated with alcohol intake.

Drinking sodas – No significant risk was associated with drinking sodas.

Drinking fruit juice- Fruit juice was associated with a decreased risk in developing urinary bladder cancer.

Causes:

Bladder cancer is a cancer caused by environmental pollutants, whether they are lifestyle related, such as smoking, or chemicals in the workplace like benzidine. Exposure to chemicals (as used in certain types of factories) and smoke (tobacco smoke) can lead to a greater risk of bladder cancer. So, the risk of bladder cancer is higher in smokers (and this is besides the fact that smoking can really increase the risk of lung cancer). However, not many smokers pay heed to the advice about quitting smoking.

Smoking is one of the most obvious risk factors that can contribute to bladder cancer. What’s worse, by the time bladder cancer starts to appear, the patient has likely been smoking for what may amount to decades. The ongoing deposit of carcinogens in the lungs and through the lungs into the blood stream has been considerable.

Diagnosis of bladder cancer

The diagnosis of bladder cancer starts with urine tests. The doctor may perform/ prescribe other tests in order to diagnose bladder cancer. X-rays, blood test, intravenous urogram and biopsies could also be used for testing bladder cancer. Again, catching bladder cancer in early stages can really help in combating this dreaded condition.

Prevention:

One of the best ways to reduce your risk of contracting bladder cancer is by stopping smoking. A proportion of the cancer-causing chemicals within cigarette smoke are absorbed into your bloodstream and in turn are filtered out and excreted through your urine. In the longer term the location of these chemicals within your body goes a long way to increase the risks of contracting bladder cancer. Therefore if you stop smoking you are reducing the risk of not only developing bladder cancers significantly, but you are also reducing the risk of it recurring.

Painkillers And Its Risks

2009 December 26

Painkillers which come from opium or synthetic opium are among the most frequently abused. Acetaminophen combined with codeine is a very popular prescription for doctors to hand out. Vicodin or hydrocodone can also be used for pain management. However, when the person develops a need to take the pain medication continually, it becomes a problem.

An analgesic is a medicine that is meant to get rid of pain. Analgesics include over-the-counter painkillers that do not require a prescription which include aspirin, acetaminophen (Tylenol), ibuprofen (Advil and others), naproxen sodium (Aleve) and a few others. Most of the time these drugs taken as recommended or one or two here and there cause few risks. But if any one of these drugs is taken for a long period of time or in higher doses the risk for kidney damage multiplies.

The side effects of these drugs can cause heart problems, cause sexual problems and reduce testosterone levels. There are a wide range of side effects and adverse reactions with other drugs being taken that are associated with painkillers. And worst of all these painkillers, that are supposed to give you relief, can actually cause a person to suffer more pain – the medical term is hyperalgesia.

Possible Side effects of painkillers

Aspirin: Intestinal hemorrhage, peptic ulcer, precipitates asthma.

Ibuprofen: Stomach ulcer, vomiting, skin reactions

Novalgin: Blood disorder

Voveran: Liver and kidney damage, water retention leading to high BP

Nimesulide: Toxic liver failure, kidney damage, blood in urine

Paracetamol: None

Risks:

1. If you’re taking high doses of painkillers and have been for some time to treat back pain, joint pain, tennis elbow, fibromyalgia, osteoarthritis or any chronic pain condition, you should be in close contact with your doctor. You need to be checked regularly for heart, stroke, kidney, liver and gastrointestinal problems.

2. All other avenues for relieving pain should be explored that are non-drug options. There are many techniques, therapies and treatments that you can do yourself that will relieve, diminish or stop your pain. If you have severe pain these methods may still reduce the amount you’re having.

3. If you’re taking painkillers often you want to use the lowest possible effective dose to treat your pain flare-ups. Painkillers should not be used to prevent pain. I’ve seen many patients expose themselves to the risks of painkillers by taking painkillers as a preventative measure.

4. Certain basics for taking pain medicines or pain medications apply. If you have a liver disorder or drink alcohol you should avoid acetaminophen (Tylenol.) Acetaminophen is in many combination drugs, read the labels or ask your pharmacist.

5. If you’ve ever had gastrointestinal bleeding or ulcers caused by any one of the NSAIDs then make sure to avoid them if at all possible. Especially if the damage was done in the past year. NSAIDs include aspirin, ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin) and naproxen (Aleve).

These are just a few of the risks, dangers and warnings that come to mind. There are many others. So be cautious if you’re taking painkillers for pain relief. Prescription and over-the-counter pain pills are not harmless. Find other non-drug options to reduce or stop your pain.
